Rain, rain, go away… and come again after the fair! Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn’t always get the memo — and sometimes we have to plan for the show to go on, rain or shine.
The good news? With a little preparation, you can protect your booth, your products, and your spirits even when the forecast looks gloomy. Here are our best tips for weathering the storm — literally!
1️⃣ Invest in a Strong, Weighted Tent
Let’s start with the basics: a sturdy canopy and proper weights are non-negotiable.
Check your tent for holes or tears that could let in water.
Make sure each leg is weighted down with at least 40 pounds.
DIY idea: fill 4- or 8-gallon water jugs and zip-tie them to the base of your tent legs — don’t just set them on the ground.
A properly weighted tent keeps you, your booth neighbors, and your products safe when wind and rain start to pick up.
2️⃣ Watch Out for Pooling Water

Rain pooling on your canopy can cause sagging, leaks, and even tent damage. If you try to push water off your roof, you also risk soaking yourself — or worse, your booth neighbor!
💡 Pro Tip: If it’s a multi-day event and rain is expected overnight, take down your canopy top before leaving for the day. It’s the best way to prevent pooling when you’re not around to monitor it.
If you do need to push pooled water off, always make sure you’re not sending it into another vendor’s space.

3️⃣ Pack Rain-Ready Supplies
Come prepared with a mini “rain kit.” You’ll thank yourself later.
Tarps, shower curtains, or extra trash bags to quickly cover your display.
Tent walls to help block wind and sideways rain.
You can even layer a shower curtain between your tent top and frame to prevent leaks.
A little plastic goes a long way toward saving your hard work from getting drenched.
4️⃣ Weigh Down Your Display
Your tent isn’t the only thing that needs stability. If you use shelves, tables, or display racks, make sure they’re weighted or anchored.
Place heavier items at the bottom to keep things grounded — think cinder blocks, stones, or heavy planters that double as décor.
5️⃣ Keep Your Tent Cozy & Contained
Close up your sidewalls and create one main entrance for shoppers. This helps prevent rain (and water runoff from neighboring tents) from splashing into your space. It also gives your booth a warm, inviting atmosphere — a dry haven for soggy shoppers!
6️⃣ Be Selective with What You Display
When rain is on the horizon, less is more. Don’t put every item out at once. Display your most durable or weather-resistant products and keep the rest safely packed until conditions improve.
This not only protects your inventory but keeps your booth organized and stress-free.
7️⃣ Bring Rain Gear (and Then Some)
Pack like a pro:
Umbrella ☂️
Rain boots
Change of clothes
Warm layers
Plenty of towels (trust us, you’ll use them)
A quick change of socks and a dry hoodie can make all the difference between miserable and manageable.
8️⃣ Turn Lemons into Lemonade — or Rain into Sales!
Don’t let bad weather dampen your sales. Try a “Rainy Day Discount” or flash sale to encourage shoppers who braved the weather.A little creativity can turn a slow day into a surprisingly good one.
9️⃣ Keep a Positive Attitude ☀️
Rainy show days can be tough, but remember — everyone’s in it together. A cheerful smile, some humor, and good energy go a long way. Shoppers will remember your positive vibe just as much as your products!
🌦️ Final Thoughts
Rain happens. But with some smart prep, the right gear, and a good attitude, you can turn even the dreariest day into a success story. After all, some of the most memorable events are the ones where vendors — and customers — weathered the storm together.
