Meet Tine's Breaking Point

Where are you from & how does that affect your work? I was born in Vermont to two Canadian parents, so while I’ve lived in California since childhood, I’ve always felt connected to more than one place. I think that mix has helped keep me curious, humble, and open to new ideas. I’m just dangerous enough to try almost anything, not particularly afraid of failure, and always interested in seeing where a new idea might lead.
Who is your biggest influence? Honestly, life is probably my biggest influence… the ups, the downs, the breaking points, and the beauty that can emerge from them. Music is never far behind, with influences ranging from Queen and Foo Fighters to Taylor Swift and Noah Kahan. I love creating pieces that carry personal meaning and finding ways to incorporate unexpected or repurposed materials, because some of the most interesting stories begin with things that weren’t originally meant to fit together.
What is the hardest part of the creation process?
The hardest part is finding the time to bring all the ideas in my head to life. I balance my glass work with a demanding full-time career, so there are never quite enough hours in the day. The upside is that when I do get into the studio, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with my creativity and discover a little more of myself along the way.
What's your favorite item that you've created, and why?
One of my favorite pieces is a custom stained-glass landscape I created inside a recycled bicycle chainring and chain for an avid cyclist. It was inspired by a stretch of road near Torrey Pines State Beach that held special meaning for both the recipient and me.
It was completely above my pay grade at the time, but I knew I had to try. I was really proud of how it turned out, and even more proud to give it as a gift that captured a special place and memory.
What do you love most about San Diego? I travel a lot for work, which means I spend plenty of time appreciating other places. But nothing beats coming home to San Diego. Between the ocean, the mountains, and the incredible people who call it home, it’s a place that continues to inspire me and remind me how lucky I am to live here.
What is a fun fact about yourself that other may not expect? Most people are surprised to learn that I spend my weekdays leading a large corporate credit organization and my weekends cutting glass, soldering, and chasing creative ideas. It’s an unexpected combination, but I’ve found that both worlds require equal parts problem-solving, patience, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.
That is just so cool! Anything special you'd like to share? Tine’s Breaking Point was born from the belief that even our breaking points can become something beautiful. My hope is that every piece I create tells a story, sparks a memory, or simply brings a little more light into someone’s day.
