Meet Wunderkits

How did Wunderkits come about? I saw a need for an easier way to have kids engage in fun, creative and non toxic activities without creating more work for grown ups. I loved getting in the weeds planning for my son's next great activity, but saw firsthand that most of my "mom friends" were turned off by the planning, supplies and mess, not to mention they were starved for time as it is. I also wanted to make sure our kits were safe for kids to handle and use. Both my son and my niece have eczema, so Wunderkits will always be free from common allergens, such as dyes, parabens, phthalates, detergents, formeldahyde and more.

Where does the name come from? Wunderkits comes from the German word "wunderkind,"  which means "wonder child." I think every child is capable of great things and Wunderkits gives them the tools to learn, try and grow confidence through the art of making things with their own hands. 

What is the hardest part of the creation process?

Finite time to do everything I want (and need!) to do. I love what I do, so I don't ever look at the process as being hard, but moreso overwhelming at times. I have so many ideas, I wish I could spit them all out at once, so I would say having to choose which creations actually make it to kit-level is the hardest part. 

What's your favorite item that you've created, and why?

Hands down the Galaxy Orb soaps! Even my 13 year old son, who thinks I'm so cringe, will stop to make one. Each one comes out unique, so the unmolding part is such anticipation to see what it looks like. It's round shape, swirl of colors, bio glitter and ease of making, make this kit my absolute favorite (and most popular kit).

What do you love most about San Diego and Pasadena? I lived in San Diego (La Jolla to be exact) many moons ago and miss it so much. I visit at least once a year and love the coast, the people, the eclectic neighborhoods, culture and fun. It's a big city with a laid back, accessible feel that I can't get enough of.

If I didn't live in Santa Monica, I would 100% live in Pasadena. Growing up in LA, I have always loved its architecture, museums and the street lamps of Colorado Boulevard. I grew up going to the Rose Parade every year and enjoyed spending time at Kidspace with my son. 

What is a fun fact about yourself that other may not expect? I'm hyper analytical and a numbers gal in my alternate life/day job! Wunderkits is the ultimate creative outlet for me and reminds me of my roots as the daughter of a 1^st grade teacher. I loved volunteering in her classroom and she always thought I should've been a teacher.

Anything special you'd like to share? My niece has been my muse for the last year and she always looks forward to testing new creations with me. The fact that she isn't bored of it yet and gets so excited each time, gives me the power to keep going, no matter what difficulties I face.
