Whether you’re a seasoned artisan or setting up for your very first handmade market, a little preparation can go a long way in helping your weekend run smoothly. Here are our top tips to get you—and your booth—ready for success!
Preparation
Before you head out, double-check your booth number and load-in instructions. Knowing where to go and when to be there makes arrival day far less stressful. A calm, organized setup means you’ll start the weekend on the right foot (and with a smile).
Permits
Make sure you’re all set to sell! Every city and state has its own requirements for vendors, so confirm that your seller’s permit or temporary tax license is valid and ready to go. This small but important step ensures a smooth event day with no last-minute surprises.
Production
As Kristen Wiig said in Bridesmaids: “Get your S*** together, Carol!” Even if your name isn’t Carol, it’s solid advice. Here’s what to focus on before the fair:
Stock up on inventory. More is always better—you never know what will be your hot seller.
Bring marketing materials. Business cards, signage, and packaging that reflect your brand make a lasting impression.
Perfect your display. Your booth is your storefront—create a setup that invites people in and shows off your craftsmanship.
Your booth is the first thing shoppers see, so make it shine! Need more tips? Check out our Looking vs. Buying Blog for ideas on creating displays that convert browsers into buyers.
Promote, Promote, Promote
A fair is more fun (and successful!) when everyone’s talking about it. Follow Jackalope Arts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest to stay up to date and easily share event news.
If you have a website or social media presence, post about your upcoming event so your customers know where to find you. You could even launch a new product or offer an exclusive fair-day discount to build buzz before the weekend!
Payment Methods
Make buying easy for your customers by offering multiple payment options.
Cash: Bring plenty of small bills and a secure way to store them.
Cards: Tools like Square and PayPal are quick to set up and customer-friendly.
A flexible checkout process helps you make the most of every sale opportunity.
Fair Time
Load up the night before, and if possible, do a mock setup at home. This helps you pack smart and streamlines your morning on-site.
Don’t forget the essentials:
A rolling cart or dolly for easy load-in/out
Scissors, tape, pens, string, and zip ties—your handy fix-it toolkit
Water, snacks, and a packed lunch to keep your energy up all day
Stay hydrated, take breaks when you can, and most importantly, have fun connecting with your fellow makers and the community. After all, Jackalope is all about celebrating creativity and the people behind it.
